The New Estée Lauder App Offers a Voice-Enabled Feature for Those Who are Blind or Visually Impaired

Global beauty giant Estée Lauder has launched a free beauty app that provides blind people and those with visual impairments with a voice-enabled Makeup Assistant to help guide their application process. The NHS estimates that there are more than 2 million people living with sight loss in the UK, with 340,000 registered blind or partially sighted. A truly inclusive move, this innovation has the potential to transform how the disabled community engages with beauty entirely. So, how exactly does it work?

The app, currently only available in the UK, can be downloaded through Apple and via esteelauder.co.uk. It works through smart mirror technology, which is a two-way mirror with an electronic display behind the glass that provides the user with, in this case, voice-enabled information. The app is driven by Estée Lauder’s Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence capabilities and was developed using machine learning.

What features does the app have?

The app helps guide people in their makeup application. The voice instruction technologies built into the app allow users to receive live audio feedback and tips on whether their lipstick, eyeshadow, or foundation is evenly applied. It intelligently assesses the uniformity and boundaries of both application and coverage, while identifying any areas on the face that may require a re-application or touch up. Through audible description, users are guided towards areas that may need looking at again.

“As a company, we are deeply committed to playing our part in creating an inclusive beauty industry. The launch of our Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant is an important step in our journey towards makeup accessibility for all by removing barriers to engaging with beauty products and services,” says Monica Rastogi, executive director, Corporate Cultural Relevancy and Inclusion and Diversity, The Estée Lauder Companies UK & Ireland.

This is the first version of the app and Estée Lauder plans to extend the technology into its other brands and products throughout 2023. They foresee future versions of the app to include new and improved features that move beyond makeup application and towards makeup education. All with the goal to help people with visual impairments feel and look their best through makeup and beauty.

How a Robotic Exoskeleton is Helping Paralysis Patients Walk Again

Sophie Shuttleworth, a 32-year-old woman from Newport, has experienced a remarkable transformation thanks to a robotic exoskeleton for paralysis. After contracting viral meningitis in July 2022, she was left paralyzed from the chest down and spent two years relying on a wheelchair.

In January, Sophie began using the exoskeleton during therapy sessions at the Morello Clinic, a local rehabilitation center. The device enables her to stand and move her legs in a natural walking pattern, allowing her to experience the sensation of being upright for the first time in two years. This moment was deeply emotional for Sophie, who described the joy of regaining mobility after such a long period of inactivity.

Beyond the emotional impact, the exoskeleton has provided Sophie with significant physical benefits. It has improved her circulation and bone density—crucial factors considering her diagnosis of osteopenia due to prolonged immobility. Sophie emphasized the mental health benefits as well, comparing the endorphins she now feels when walking to the exhilaration she experienced while swimming, a sport she loved before her illness.

Sophie, along with eight others who use the exoskeleton, is actively fundraising to support its continued availability at the clinic, aiming to raise £50,000 for a year of access to this life-changing technology. Each user benefits uniquely from the device, demonstrating its versatility in addressing various mobility challenges.

Before her illness, Sophie was fiercely independent and even swam 22 miles in a local pool to raise money for charity. While she continues to rely on family support for certain tasks, she is optimistic about the future. The combination of the exoskeleton and her new ground-floor apartment, designed to meet her needs, brings her closer to regaining her independence.

As she navigates this new chapter, Sophie remains hopeful and determined, believing that with continued use of the exoskeleton, she can achieve greater autonomy in her daily life. Her story not only highlights the potential of robotic technology in rehabilitation but also serves as an inspiration to many facing similar challenges.
