Like Poseidon and Aphrodite, they are eating grapes and playing music on an open terrace. Is this paradise?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Back in his native Denmark, Utzon had already built a remarkable home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> surrounded by forest <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for himself and his family. As the country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">first open-plan <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">house<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the Helleb\u00e6k House (1952) was received as something of a revelation, and yet the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> was clearly inundated with a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">intuitive, crafty, and unpedigreed approach to modern building <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in line<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with Utzon\u2019s personal manner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">owever, when <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">move<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to Australia in 1962 to oversee the construction of the Sydney Opera House, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he started<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> planning something that appears more deliberately <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fundamental<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as if <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on elevating a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quiet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> life in nature to a nearly religious experience.<\/span>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151716,151745,151714,151715,153045,151718]},{"acf_fc_layout":"two_blocks","block_sizes":"half_50_50","content_type_left":"image","image_size_left":"regular","image_left":151717,"video_left_url":"","video_caption_left":"","video_left_type":false,"text_left":"","credit_image":null,"credit_link_left":null,"content_type_right":"image","image_size_right":"regular","image_right":151713,"video_right_url":"","video_caption_right":"","video_right_type":false,"text_right":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"A NEW ARCHITECTURE\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lans for the Australian home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, now<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">referred<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to as the Bayview House (1962<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">66)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">were scrapped when political pressure from the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">overnment of New South Wales <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prompted<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Utzon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to leave Australia <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">abruptly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in 1966. For several years, the family moved around<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">perhaps a little rootlessly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">between Denmark, Sweden, and Hawaii, but the intention to settle by the sea lived on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hen <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the chance<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a more perm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anent residence <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">came along, the Bayview sketch offered a preliminary concept for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Can Lis (1971<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">73)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">widely recognised as one of the most important homes of late<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-20th century<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> architecture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151550]},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"full","gallery":[151793]},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"<span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Utzon\u2019s view, the meditative and organic character of Can Lis can be linked to an instinct for humanist ideals that emerged in the aftermath of two World Wars. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018We were optimistic because the war was over\u2019,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Utzon recalled, but the terror of the war also resulted in a widely shared impulse to begin again, to find restoration in nature, and to push the discourse of modern architecture beyond the \u2018Corbusier-defined white boxes\u2019 that now seemed so reductive and sterile. Utzon and his Nordic fellows had seen \u2018Dresden bombed flat during the Second World War\u2019. His mentor, Alvar Aalto, had witnessed the destruction of towns and cities in Finland. \u2018He saw them all burn, saw his Finnish friends in the ultimate distress\u2019, Utzon wrote. \u2018He had seen them seek shelter under sheets of corrugated iron\u2019.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">While modern architecture in Europe had evolved with a reverence for functionalism and the technocratic possibilities of industrialisation, Utzon and other pioneers of a distinctly Nordic approach to modernism began considering the importance of \u2018a poetic superstructure\u2019, as the Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund put it. That structure included a pragmatic responsiveness towards <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">local traditions and materials, forging a sense of place, reintroducing sculptural qualities, and a richness of details <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">symbolic qualities. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These architects travelled extensively for inspiration, hoping <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to restore an existential foothold for architecture, a sense of belonging in contemporary building. While earlier generations had entertained the idea of breaking away from history completely, Utzon <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">came<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to understand himself as part of a historical continuum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014a modern approach that insisted on something as timeless as creating spaces that nurture the soul. <\/span>\r\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151536]},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151540]},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"SAND, SEA, SUN<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">When an architect designs and builds for himself, he has the opportunity to go to the edge of his own imagination. This is especially true when it comes to Can Lis, which feels both \u2018new\u2019 and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">timeless, more closely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> linked to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Utzon\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s deep affinity for topographical villages in Morocco, Mexico<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">platform temples, and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">monasteries<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Japan than most of his other buildings.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">According to popular <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Utzons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> found the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cliffside where Can Lis rests<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on a drive along small country roads. Lis, who had a flair for languages, asked some local farmers if there <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> any land for sale in the area. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Out of three available plots<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the couple bought two, including a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rocky outcropping on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a cliffside that overlooks the endlessness of the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mediterranean<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> 20 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">metres<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> below. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the road, Can Lis doesn\u2019t attract much attention. All the functions of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are divided into separate domains: a kitchen with an adjoining courtyard, a living room, a dormitory, and a small atrium appear as individual houses in a village-like complex linked by small terraces, plateaus, and paths. The scale is surprisingly small, almost intimate. Beds are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recessed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> into walls<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">here is a small pantry, a dining area, and a space for cooking, which is arguably spartan. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is no TV room<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, no pool are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a, no heating other than a single fireplace.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> It is in many ways a challenging house where certain modern comforts are purposefully omitted. Can Lis is a place to delight in the little things<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he golden light that gives the porous walls visual depth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he changing seasons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">wimming in the sea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">atching a sunrise. The architecture is down-to-earth and unpretentious, yet a cosmic feeling emphasises that this is not a house: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t\u2019s a temple.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151546]},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"\u2018HAPPINESS IS COUNTED IN SECONDS\u2019\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">A mysterious mix, Can Lis is both grounded and sublime. There\u2019s a classic<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">order here, and you sense how elemental forces linger in everything. The house\u2019s anchor, the living room, is perhaps the best example of this duality, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a space that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> could easily be compared to both caves and chapels.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Its entrance is located in a shaded courtyard under a covered walkway, like a portico, that is supported by a row of columns. The portico creates a small compression of space before entering the living room, which opens upwards and outwards<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pwards towards a white, vaulted ceiling, and outwards towards the horizon, framed by a wraparound sandstone wall penetrated by five deep, frameless window niches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Utzon described how, when he designed the living room, he would visit a grotto that lies directly beneath the house where he could sit and enjoy the tension between the introspecti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of the cave and the endlessness of the horizon. Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> memory<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> relived in Can Lis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 interior<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where everything is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> orientated towards the sea, framed by telescopic windows. At the centre of the living room, where guests are most palpably surrounded by the landscape and the stone world of the Mediterranean, a large half<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">moon-shaped sofa invites you to rest. There is the smell of earth, stone, and soot from the fireplace, and a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">complete <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">silence resonates until, through a small window perched high up on the western wall, a ray of sun <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">suddenly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> creates a fiery streak across the wall. This play of light happens every day, a small piece of theatre that stages the earth\u2019s orbit for a few, cosmic minutes. Utzon considered the house to be a kind of timekeeper that could hold on to a moment and remind us that \u2018happiness is counted in seconds\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"two_blocks","block_sizes":"half_50_50","content_type_left":"image","image_size_left":"regular","image_left":151538,"video_left_url":"","video_caption_left":"","video_left_type":false,"text_left":"","credit_image":null,"credit_link_left":null,"content_type_right":"image","image_size_right":"regular","image_right":151542,"video_right_url":"","video_caption_right":"","video_right_type":false,"text_right":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[151534]},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"AFTERLIFE\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">For a quarter of a century, Can Lis was the permanent centre of J\u00f8rn and Lis\u2019 life, but when the architect\u2019s eyes bec<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">me sensitive to the intense light by the sea, the family decided to build Can Feliz (1992<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">94), the House of Happiness, further inland on a mountainside by S\u2019Horta.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Utzon succumbed to a heart attack in 2008, all of his houses\u2014the Helleb\u00e6k House, Can Lis, and Can Feliz\u2014were passed on to his three children. Can Lis, his most recognised masterpiece, was acquired by the Utzon Foundation in 2011 to preserve the architect\u2019s work for generations to come. Today, the house serves as an endowed residence and has become a pilgrimage site for architects and artists from around the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">While both of Utzon\u2019s Mallorcan homes reflect a propensity towards nature, there is no mention of words like \u2018sustainability\u2019, \u2018off-grid\u2019, or \u2018simple living\u2019 in his private archive. More than a reflection of postwar idealism, Utzon\u2019s nod to paradise is an early and particularly fine example of a new thoughtfulness in architecture, one inspired by place.
