The mood of Vandross\u2019 eight-song <i>Night<\/i> glides from relatable charade to trembling intimacy to the resignation that love and loneliness are but sides of a coin. <em>Night<\/em> is flawed only in ways that further its point: The world makes it hard to tell your truths. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The first song, for example, is a shaky foundation at best. \u2018\u2018Til My Baby Comes Home\u2019 tells a story of the singer\u2019s intense love for a girlfriend\u2014<i>Every night when I sleep \/ I\u00a0dream of my baby \/ She\u2019s such a lady \/ Then I wake up and see \/ That she\u2019s laying by me \/ Right there beside me<\/i>. It feels\u2026 off. I want Vandross to write and sing about who he more likely truly dreams of. But that\u2019s none of my business. Patti LaBelle problematically outed her friend in 2017, but Vandross died in 2005 at 54, having never confirmed or denied rumours that he was gay. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The eight-time Grammy winner had many reasons to create from behind a wafting curtain of hetero romance. In the mid-\u201880s, queer Black men were carving out vibrant spaces in which to love and thrive, but America was enthralled by a homophobic \u2018moral majority\u2019 who considered HIV\/AIDS a wrath of God. It was hateful in the music world as well. In 1998, the year Vandross released <i>I Know<\/i> (Virgin), George Michael was arrested and globally dragged for \u2018soliciting sex\u2019. In 1999, Tevin Campbell was arrested on charges of \u2018lewd behavior\u2019, and his career was shattered. (Campbell came out in 2022.) The great Johnny Mathis, icon of \u201850s and \u201860s balladeering, didn\u2019t come out to a huge audience until 2017, when he was 82. Mathis isn\u2019t known for his songwriting, but it\u2019s his mellifluous middle-tenor that most informs the leaning tower that is Vandross\u2019 <i>The Night I Fell in Love<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"video","video":"https:\/\/vz-a6a6cda4-492.b-cdn.net\/0e9ea79a-081f-4e37-871d-ee1ae09f6999\/play_720p.mp4","video_caption":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The title song, placed second, is the album\u2019s good bones. It sets the tone: a mostly disciplined, drawn-out mid-tempo. There\u2019s the invitation in Vandross\u2019 voice when he says, <i>It actually happened<\/i>. It\u2019s the dynamic contraltos of his background singers. Vandross, who is not spoken about enough as an elite songwriter, often writes and sings about the stars above, and this time, as he croons about them <i>shining brighter than most of the time<\/i>, there\u2019s the lilt in his manner of everything going one\u2019s way. Luther wrote the ecstatic \u2018A\u00a0Brand New Day (Everybody Rejoice)\u2019 for the original Broadway production of <i>The Wiz<\/i>, and theatrical word-painting is in his DNA. When he sings, <i>I thought I would be happy \/ Without any love in my world \/ But now I know that \/ That is so untrue<\/i>, the song, which never mentions a \u2018she\u2019 or a \u2018her\u2019, feels crafted by the owner of a lonely heart.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We then tiptoe the grand sonic staircase that is \u2018If Only For One Night\u2019, a cover of singer\/songwriter Brenda Russell\u2019s 1979 album cut. That song includes no \u2018she\u2019 or \u2018her\u2019 either, and <i>I won\u2019t tell a soul \/ no one has to know \/ if you want to be \/ totally discreet<\/i> functions on multiple levels. One of which is Vandross\u2019 comforting of many ladies of the \u201880s who worried\u2014so as not to be labeled a \u2018tramp\u2019\u2014about keeping a low \u2018body count\u2019. How Russell\u2019s lyrics must have appealed to Vandross: <i>Standing in this place \/ But I\u2019m feelin\u2019 no disgrace \/ For askin\u2019 \/ Let me hold you tight<\/i>. And then for him to ease so confidently and sexily, minus crackling dead space, into his <i>And it\u2019s gon\u2019 be tonight, <\/i>the forever-famous line of \u2018Creepin\u2019\u2019, a song written by Stevie Wonder for his 1974 Album of the Year, <i>Fulfillingness\u2019 First Finale<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018It\u2019s Over Now\u2019 is that creaky staircase you dash up, hoping not to fall through\u2014because the lofty and freeing suite of the album\u2019s last three songs beckons. There\u2019s \u2018Wait For Love\u2019 with its elegantly precise choir, the strengthening (sadly necessary) ambiguity about the lover\u2019s identity, and the vividness not just of Vandross\u2019 lyrics, but in the earnestness of his delivery. He really wanted us to believe that if we had patience, good true love would make itself known. And we did believe\u2014just as we did when he sings in \u2018My Sensitivity (Gets In the Way)\u2019,<i> At times I don\u2019t believe that I can\u2019t control my heart \/ It skips a beat even before the lovin\u2019 starts<\/i>. Of all the songs on the album, \u2018Sensitivity\u2019 feels the most coded. It\u2019s a sliding bookcase revealing a secret escalier to an ornate rooftop beneath a shimmering starscape.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s like when you go to another hemisphere\u2014or even just a whole new part of yourself\u2014and the constellations are different. You no longer feel\u2026 off. You are lost but you are found. And even though the construction of this classic album is imperfect, it is strong. And so is Luther, the designer who built it. Authenticity is a privilege Vandross didn\u2019t have. And today, almost 40 years later, even as people and institutions and systems try to snatch ourselves from ourselves, even as we are told we are ugly and unworthy\u2014we, heartbreakingly, have more than he did. So, we must continue to be disorderly, to act up. To, in the face of tyranny, build things. Or\u00a0else, why did Luther Vandross even tell us, with half of himself, about the nights he fell in love?
