We\u2019re in the birthplace of flamenco, a land full of bullfighting aficionados, traditional fairs, and religious processions. In-between this rooted folklore and liturgy is where Alejandro Palomo has kept challenging assumptions defining menswear and the meaning of true freedom in fashion.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>On a boiling Saturday in September, we drive across the province of C\u00f3rdoba towards Posadas, a town of only 7,000 residents, where the designer was born and still lives today. Along the outer fringes of the town, we arrive at a white <em>cortijo<\/em> with three barns and a two-storey house that\u2019s both Alejandro\u2019s home and the headquarters of his eponymous brand, Palomo Spain. As we park the car, his colossal Weimaraner named Lucio barks restlessly until Alejandro comes to the door wearing a taffeta red shirt and a pair of short shorts. We manage to squeeze in a quick morning tour before having a bite of the local Posadas breakfast\u2014toasted bread with rubbed tomato, olive oil, salt, and ham. On any given weekday the ground floor is filled with seamstresses, designers, pattern makers, and occasional family visitors. The top floor is divided between the brand\u2019s offices and Alejandro\u2019s actual living quarters.<\/strong><\/p>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image_size":"regular","gallery":[104353]},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","text":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>I have visited him over the years and every time I come back his home feels more like a home. \u2018I finally have a bathroom in my room\u2019, says Alejandro, with a beaming grim. Not too long ago he had to shower and brush his teeth downstairs next to his team of 20 people. Some of them are born and bred in Posadas, others have moved all the way here just to work with him. Since early on, Palomo Spain has created an extended family, not only in Posadas, but on runways around the world. The label\u2019s collections exist outside of any preconceived associations with gender identity and have become a safe haven for anyone challenging binary constraints in their conceived notion of men\u2019s fashion. Alejandro\u2019s designs reside in his inherent contradictions, tradition and craft are met with unrestrained thirst for discovery and freedom.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Alejandro\u2019s actual family has accompanied the designer every step of the way. Right before lunch, his mother, Manoli, pays us a visit with an aperitivo and a couple of frozen beers. They are all nervous about the imminent debut of Palomo\u2019s designs for the New York City Ballet (which will be a smashing success in the coming weeks). Over lunch we talk about his decorating gene, wild flowers, sleeping naked, and what makes a perfect host. As impeccable hosts themselves, they invite us to an uncle\u2019s birthday party with more beer, more family, and more flamenco.
